Ocean Thematic Fun

One of my favorite thematic units is Ocean; after all the ocean is amazing! Did you know there are over 1 million different types of species that live in the sea, and the ocean covers more that 70% of our planet earth?

I didn't  see the ocean for myself until my 30's, and when I did, I fell in love! Now I visit the ocean as often as my checkbook will allow. But to hold me between visits, I like to learn more about the ocean with my kindergarten students. I begin the unit with an overview about the ocean, using books that have general ocean information such as these with my affiliate links: I have found this books to be quality additions to my unit.

As we are beginning the unit with the ocean overview, I have my students finger paint large pieces of butcher paper to serve as the background for our hallway display. This is very messy, but fun and creates a beautiful background display. After adding a sign, the addition of sea life is added one-by-one.

After the ocean overview, I teach my students about oceanographers and the different ways that humans can study the ocean using  submarines,  scuba diving, and even robots. We then begin studying different sea creatures providing a variety between fiction and non-fiction books.

We offer two complete thematic units that fill your classroom with cross-curricular oceans of fun!

All of our thematic units have oodles of activities that are academically challenging, yet developmentally appropriate. Click on the product covers to get the full descriptions. You can also find these products at TPT.
