Guided Reading During Covid Times

Has Covid 19 been messing with your reading groups this year like it has mine?

Usually my students have a large array of books which they can choose to read from, as well as books they are able to take home. This year, however, has definitely made that more challenging.  Every teacher knows that kids need to practice reading in order to learn to read, and we need books to do that! That’s why I am so grateful for printable guided readers. I am able to print off multiple copies so each of my students has their own copy. No need to worry about sharing germs here!

We use them in small group reading and then the students add them to their bag of books. These books are also great for introducing some of our content standards like school rules or helpers in the school.

I also appreciate that I can teach our sight words and build on them in the next book. For example, I can start with “The School”  with a focus on the sight word ‘the’ and then move on to ‘All About Me’ to reinforce the word while teaching the new word ‘my’.

I love using books that allow me to use the reading strategies I teach to my reading groups. These include looking at the picture, thinking about what makes sense, and checking to see if it looks right.

These sight-word and decodable readers also support my students as they practice blending skills which is VERY important for phonemic awareness.

Also, if your school uses the Wonders Program, we have Wonders books that align perfectly!

My students love having their own books that they can read and reread, They can color them and personalize them. The ownership they have is a powerful motivator and I love watching their growth!
