Teachers Need Play Too

We all know that play is a child’s work, and that play is essential to well-being and growth. But do any of us adults take the time to remember that play is also essential for us? Play for adults is not only a relief from the serious effects of stress, it is actually therapy!

Teaching is a stressful job. Anyone who has ever taught in a classroom knows that fact, for sure. Consequently, adding play into ones own life is more important than ever! In fact it is so important that all teachers need to have a great big note in clear view, “Every Day Engage in Play!”

Some form of daily play is one of the best ways to safeguard physical and mental health. Play, whether through dance, sports, painting, musical instruments, sewing, hiking, walking, photography, bird watching, mental puzzles, learning a new language, book clubs, garden clubs, and on and on, will benefit your life! (Right now, I am trying my hand at bird journaling and mixed media notebooks).

Playing daily will keep your brain young and healthy and ready for the rigors of teaching! When you start making play a daily part of your routine, you will be surprised at the great relief from stress you will feel. You will feel newfound optimism, happiness, and a deeper sense of being. So, as you fill out your daily teaching lesson plans, don’t forget to add, at the end of every day, a dose of play for yourself!

Ready - Set - Play!
