Building Addition Fluency
The foundation for addition practice lays in number-sense, visualization, and the management of math manipulatives. When this foundation is firmly laid, students then move to formal math problems using paper and pencil. To be successful, students need strategic, repetitive practice to become fluent with math facts 0-5. With this practice, Kindergartners are developing a foundation that will set their path toward life-long appreciation of mathematics. 0 to 5 is the standard for kindergarten.
I do several quick practice sheets a week to continually practice math fluency with the numbers 0-5 and then moving to 0-10. However, 0 to 5 is the standard for kindergarten so that is where I put my focus. I want them to be fluent, to be able to do these 0-5 problems automaticaly.
I have found that this practice not only strengthens addition skills, but helps thwart math anxiety. My kindergarten students gain confidence with these simple sheets! They love them!
After introduction of the sheets, I simply but them on the table for them to do as enter the classroom work, at a math center, or during math time.
